4 Shutter Myths Exposed

April 03, 2017

We spend a lot of time talking to residents about shutters in Charlotte.

And although it may be surprising, when we speak with people around Queen City, we hear the same few myths about shutters floating around. We want to spend a few moments to set the record straight and expose some oft-repeated plantation shutter myths so you’re able to make the perfect choice for your space when it comes time for new window treatments.

Myth: Shutters Are Easy to DIY

Lots of home design projects can easily be done on your own in a single weekend. Putting in shutters might not be one of them, however.

Putting in new shutters can be difficult from the start, as the measurements of the lengths and angles of the windows need to be incredibly precise to ensure a smooth and snug fit, as well as to enable proper operation of your windows. Depending on what the shutters are made of, from Polywood® shutters to reclaimed wood shutters, raising large shutter panels and installing them straight can present a difficult task. If just one step of the process is done incorrectly, you might end up with misshapen shutters or frequent drafts from ill-fitting weather-stripping.

Myth: Shutters Will Make Homes Look Dim

Less-informed home designers might opt out of shutters, thinking they’ll make houses look dark or dimly lit. This myth most likely comes from being unfamiliar with interior shutters.

Think of it this way: light from the sun will always enter through your windows at an angle. Shutters let you alter that angle by tilting their louvers, offering you more effective control over level of light. And remember, shutters are able to swing completely open to let in as much light as you could want.

Myth: Shutters Are Too Expensive

It’s accurate that shutters won’t be as cheap as common blinds from a department store. But this myth is more about how you’re thinking about shutters. If you think about shutters as just a simple decoration that you don’t expect to last more than a few years, then yes, shutters are fairly expensive. But shutters are a lasting addition to your house, and offer several benefits: they’re energy efficient and can lower heating and AC bills, they can increase your home value, and shutters can last decades, unlike blinds–which will need to be replaced repeatedly throughout the years.

Myth: Shutters Only Work In Older Homes

Maybe the name “plantation shutters” is to blame for the myth that shutters are an “old-timey” treatment, but it definitely isn’t true. While shutters were seen often in older home styles stretching back decades, their straight, clean lines and neutral colors allow them to fit in with more chic, modern designs just as seamlessly. Shutters are the pinnacle of versatile window treatments.
